11. The position of the key underneath the sewing frame

12/

Repeat this for all the other tapes and keys. The tapes should all be fairly taut and under the same amount of tension. Adjust the screws on the sidebars of the frame if necessary, to tighten the tapes.

13/

Place a pressing board on to the base of the sewing frame – this will lift your sections up from the base of the frame, enabling you to insert the needle into the first section more easily.

14/

Choose your sewing thread carefully; remember your aim is to create 25 per cent more swell at the spine of the book to make rounding and backing easier. Thread your needle.

15/

Place the back endpaper on to the pressing board with the waste sheet down. Place a small weight into the centre fold of the ‘white’ folio, and then move the tapes, so that they are well aligned between the pricked sewing holes.

16/

Sew from the tail end of the endpaper (if you are right-handed), and leave a tail of approximately 100mm. Sew in at the kettle-stitch, out at the first tape, back in, and so on, keeping the thread pulled taut as you go. When you come out of the other kettle-stitch hole, remove the weight and then bone down the spine fold of the endpaper.

17/

Put the back section on top of the endpaper section and sew as before. Continue in this way, remembering to kettle-stitch at the end of the third and subsequent sections. After you have sewn four sections, check that you have 25 per cent more swell at the spine of the book, by pressing down at the spine area of the book.
